campaign. the staff never wanted to talk about the candidate. they wanted to make it about obama and his handling of the economy. ultimately, that a lot obama and his campaign to define mitt romney and his campaign. host: and yet, he did talk about his mormon faith at the convention. other members that spoke about mitt romney, but that only happened at the convention. it did not happen in 30-second spots. did not move much beyond that. guest: the obama campaign did not understand what they were up to. they did not anticipate the extent to which mitt romney would not address his own personality or record. one of the interesting elements of this book is, on may 26, right at the beginning of the campaign, when the obama folks were stumbling, they had this meeting in the roosevelt room, other advisers and the president, and they said, we are going to get creamed at the end of the race anyway. let's take $100 million we have for advertising and push it forward into june and july to define him in the battleground states. other candidates, bill clinton in 1996, did the same thing. this was a re

tied with obama. in reality obama beat them by about 6 points. actually 2 p.5. in new hampshire romney's polls had him ahead by five or three rather. these are like nine-point differences. it also showed the internal numbers were off in wisconsin, and it shows even more clearly why their confidence peeked right before the vote. over the last wecht the romney numbers showed romney gained strong momentum. in wisconsin he lost 4 points as romney gained 4 tied up the race. in new hampshire obama lost four while he gained three. he was talking to romney's sun tagg. as the results were coming in, quote, he looked like he was in a complete state of shock as if these numbers cannot be real. to make matters worse, florida and virginia, two states romney lost, he was told were in the bag. john braybender is an adviser to rick santorum. i want to start with you, john. you're on the inside. you know something about this. do you understand how somebody would think that the electorate that's going to participate in 2012 in a general election with barack obama, an african-american, a democrat, and a

the fiscal cliff, which is the christmas present the country needs. today we heard president obama's response to the proposal that house speaker john boehner put on the table yesterday. >> the speaker's proposal right now is still out of balance. >> of out of balance. kind of similar to what republicans said last week when the president sent over his terms. so now what? will they sit down and talk it through? well, not according to at least one senior republican aide who told cnn today, no conversations today, no e-mails, tweets, carrier pigeons. as for boehner and obama, they actually did see each other in person at the white house holiday party last night in black tie. while other lawmakers waited in line to get the photo with the president, multiple sources from both sides of the aisle tell cnn that boehner wasn't among them. so much for holiday cheer. we have this picture. we're waiting for the day there's a fiscal cliff. there wasn't total silence in washington today. senate majority leader harry reid spoke up. but in his case, in the form of a swipe. >> i sympathize with john boehner. t
